Have you ever seen Santa Claus' biography on The Biography Channel - if not WATCH IT - it's so interesting - i'm sure they'll repeat it this year, perhaps nearer to christmas day.
Santa has been represented in many different colours, including blue, green and red depending on the country and the age of the tradition.
The popular belief is that it was Coca Cola who changed his gree/blue to red in order to match their company's trademark colour. However, it was traditional to see Father Christmas (who Santa originates from) in a red suit long before Coca Cola was even thought of. The one thing that could be argued is that they made his suit a little more brighter in shade ... more scarlet? Whereas the older pictures show him in a more faded shad of red - but that's just nit picking if you ask me.
In short - yes Santa was dressed in red before coca cola - he does appear in blue sometimes.... not sure if that tradition is German or not .... ???
Seriously tho - if you get the chance to see The Biography Channel's "the biography of Santa Claus" PLEASE watch it.... it's SO worth it... it answers this question and so many more (including those you haven't even thought of yet! )

Santa had many forms before Coca Cola. His robe has been many colors depending on the culture (Red included). The Norman Rockwell aka Coca Cola Santa was so popular he became the tradition in the 1920s.

Santa Claus is traditionally represented in a red cloak with white fur trimmings, a reference to St Nicholas, who reputably performed his charitable acts dressed in his red bishop's robes.

Santa is paid by the multinationals and corporations. He got no values, morals or ethics. He sold his soul to capitalism.
Sinterklaas is the guy that looks after the kids and that is how it all started long, long time ago.
But his helper is not very politically correct. So he gets shooed.
Bah, Humbug!
Check it out though
