My 96 Intrepid (150000 miles) makes a loud clunking noise when either turning sharply or when accelerating quickly or up a steep hill. I am pretty sure the CV joints need to be replaced, but am wondering if those symptoms are all consistent with that or if it may also be the air filter, or possibly a timing belt issue. Any ideas??

Mostly likely it the CV Joint. Click, Click is outer. Clunk, Clunk is Inner. For a regular person it hard to know which side. You can try having someone stand one side then the other and turn wheels hard and pull forward and they may be able to hear. Also, look, usually the one with a bad rubber boot is the problem. I replaced the Passenger side on my Taurus last summer, drove it until it popped and Ball Bearing went everywhere. Also, when one go the car will not go. Driver side was quite, but a few days ago I started hearing the Click, Click sound. So, it went a year more. It best just to Replace both and be done with it until next time, which you may never see. For mine 1992 Ford Taurus New are about $80 each at Autozone and a Rebuilt was $70 each, for a $10 difference, I bought the new. Did the work myself.
If, you have this done or do it yourself, replace the Transmission Seals too, they not that expensive and you already be there.

I have had to replace all of those parts and the noises you are describing is the CV joints. Although it never hurts to change your air filter it is really a minor issue. The timing belt is something that you would recognize easily because the cars engine will just cut off and not start again. I was driving down the road and my car just cut off I pulled to the side and tried to restart the engine to no avail. That was also much more expensive to repair than the CV joints. Good luck!

I think it is just CV joints the air filter or timing belt would not cause a noise that I know of.

it could just need to have the air filter cleaned out because it may not be getting any air or your drive-shaft bearing needs to be greased
