Other than size, and finage it's really not possible. Of course size varies base on genetics, and diet. With males they get to be near full sized in the store, but don't fully grow out their fins until 1 year. Generally they are 6 months to 1 year old. I've seen (and bought) fully developed males who I suspect were former breeding stock. (Past 2-3 years you really want young betta.) Honestly unless you are trying to breed it doesn't matter. Get a healthy active one that has a look you like. Bettas live for 3-5 years, and cost next to nothing. Even worst case, in terms of age, he'll live for a couple of years. Best case is only about 4.5 years.

No idea how old your fish is (bit like asking how long is a piece of string), but the staff at the fish store may have known. If you ring and ask they may know at what age their breeders usually bring them in. Bettas often don't go on sale in shops until they're almost a year old though.

The younger bettas are sold in pet stores, however, older ex-breeders are sold there too. Younger fish generally have shorter fins, while older fish's dorsal fin will begin to droop more and they will develop an upward cure to their topline. Bettas only live about three years so now you have a gaudge, depending on how long you've had your fish and how big it was when you bought it.

As far as I know there is no easy way (like looking at teeth in dogs). You have to judge by size and how long you've had him. You'll see that the bettas sold in petstores are usually fairly small. They are usually sold at 6-8 months old.
