If you see a small arrow on the icon, you can delete it, because it's a shortcut. If it is a program, it'll warn you that it is a program and do you still want to delete it. Delete the shortcuts.

Assuming you are using Windows XP as your operating system, I would suggest you do the following in the same sequence.
1. Identify the icons on your desktop that you rarely use, or don't use at all.
2. Right Click on each of these icons, or using your mouse select more than one of them, and subsequently delete them.
3. Right click on an empty area of your desktop, scroll up to Arrange Icons by, and then "uncheck" the show desktop icons option.
This way your desktop will look clean all the time, and any time you decide that you want your icons back, you can right click, scroll up to Arrange Icons by and then Check the show desktop icons option. Voila! They all come back

If your desktop is like mine I have what seems like hundreds of icons on the desktop. This is what I do that simplifies the desktop but still has quick access to my programs. Right click on the desk top and create a folder and name it after a catagory (such as games). Now move all the icons that are games to this folder. Do the same for other catagories and soon your desktop will look clean and you will still have easy access to the programs.

I hope this helps. Please don't forget to pick this as best answer.
Thanks
Andy

Here is what I did. Right click on your desktop-click new folder-name it anything you want to, such as extra icon's, or something-Then drag the icons, that you don't use much, into that folder-then when you want to see what is in there, just click the new folder that you just created. I do this for all the shopping websites, that I like to visit..good luck..

you can either create a new folder on your desktop and place your unused icons in that folder or you can just delete the shortcuts

You can probably delete most of them. Most of them are just shortcuts to programs or files that you can access a different way. If it has a curved arrow on it, then it is a shortcut. I would reccomend you delete the shortcuts that you do not frequently use.

You can also use the dektop cleanup wizard.

If you don't use all of them, delete the ones you don't use. Then take the ones you do use, but less than weekly, and create a folder to categorize them. For me I have folders for security, for anti-virus spyware and healer, and a media folder for my players. Or if you have windows they have a program called desktop clean-up wizzard. Do a search for that and run it.

The best thing to do is to either delete shortcuts, then remove all unwanted files onto a server drive or hard drive that has space.
