Go to any dealer he will provide you these details but I think you should decide according to what are your requirements.

You also need to decide how much money you can spend on it, whether you want a laptop or a desktop, & whether you need it before Xmas, or can wait.
There really is no "latest" anymore. It keeps changing be before anything can be called a standard for anything.
A good Mac would be fine. Linux is gaining a spot in the PC-compatible market. For a Windows-based box, get a 2 gig speed (1.7 might do) and 2gig RAM, flat screens are nice, NIC/RJ45 connector for Broadband is needed.
USB 2.0 of course, and DVD r/w and 100 gig Disk drive.
Windows VISTA included would be good. But now XP based machines will be on clearance next month. You could also throw in a webcam, speakers, or a joystick assembly. Vista requires a powerful machine to perform at its best. Modems for the phone are history.
That's the CURRENT, GOOD Scenario. If you want to go WILD, FUTURISTIC, then arrive with an armored truck behind you, the salesclerk will be happy to reserve a parking space untill they can empty it.

Your question is too broad. For most of what you list there's no need for the most powerful spec's. Video editing, games, graphics & multi-media can eat up a lot of power... but for home use it's not likely this will be a problem You need to take a little time to understand your needs & the spec's to make the best decision for yourself.

I used to sell computers until the company I worked for went belly up.
The whole object for a computer salesperson selling you a computer is to lead you to the ones that will earn him/her the most commission. He or she may have some knowledge of computers, but have only a modicum of interest in what you really want to do with a PC or Mac.
So, I can't really tell you how to pick a computer because I am being honest with you.
So, here is a website from which you can choose for yourself and it has other likewise websites to help you spend some time finding the best one for you:
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/search.php
Keep in mind that even if you find the best one for you, you may not be able to find a retailer/ distributor who has your choice in their inventory. So, try to choose a range of selections.
Got me?

If you want to price/check-out the latest high-end, speed-oriented stuff, check out:
http://www.alienware.com
They specialize in high-end systems built for exactly for what you need. . . but you will pay for it.
P.S. John "A+ Certified Professional"'s specs are crap. A MODEM? SERIOUSLY? What century are you living in man? The P4 is garbage (heat, power consumption, performance, etc). 512 MB of ram will get you a SLOW windows XP system. That and Windows Vista NEEDS 2GB of RAM if you are serious about running it and gaming.
Check out Intel's "Core 2 Extreme". They blow everything out of the water (heat, power consumption, performance).
