Images of confederate waving, gun holding, deer hunting, conservative (and usually bigoted) rednecks come to the minds of northern folks when the South is mentioned...
How far off are they?

In some cases, right on the mark, in others not even close. Millions of people live in the South, and they all have differing views and beliefs. Living in Louisiana, some days i'm optimistic about our country's future, after seeing displays of tolerance and acceptance. Other days, after watching embarrassing displays of hatred and discrimination I'm convinced that racist, intolerant bigots run the world or at least have all the money/power and that is sickening.

There's a 4th of July parade that goes down Main Street in the small North Carolina town where my husband's grandfather still lives... near the end of the parade, there is a group of Civil War re-enactors... all dressed in confederate grey, waving the rebel flag. Most of the people there still call it "the war of northern aggression"... so I can understand why some might think that everyone in the south is like that, but it's really not true. It's just a stereotype...which unfortunately has some basis in fact, but it's still a stereotype. One cannot/should not paint everyone in the south with the same broad brush.

Well, that descibes a small portion of those of us from the south. I am southern and I don't hunt, drive a truck nor am I a bigot. There are many of us Southerners who are educated, accepting of other cultures and their differences and know how to act in public and social siuations.Putting any culture into a box and describing them all in one way is wrong. I know that many people think New Yorkers are rude, loud and unfriendly....that's not true of all of them either. I have lived in many different states and still love the south...even though we are a little slower than some. We are not all stupid rednecks.

During my travels to the south, that's what I've mostly seen. Sorry. You also forgot to mention fanatically religious.
