No one should work like a donkey.
In progressive societies working hours are established with a norm for the safety of the worker and industry.
In north America weekly working hour limits typicaly range from 35 to 55 depending upon business requirements.
You need to establish break periods or rest hours rather than continuous working - during the work period. Breaks for meals and coffee or tea etc. are essential to maintain energy level and alertness.
Attention and efficiecny decreses with continuous working.
Distractions to attentiveness need to be eliminated.
As trains become more and more semi-automated, gadgets and interventions used by drivers to keep them going without paying due attention must be continuously monitored by engineering inspections and other means.

So taking all of the above into consideration - a 12 hour shift on alternate days, with no more than 4 days over a seven days period should not compromise safety.

If the straight time and overtime compensation rules are applied correctly industry-wide, then the economics itself will dictate a prudent utilization of money and labour. No one should die to raise a decent family or cause harm to other people in the society whose lives also depend upon his honest work.
