I knew a girl that was on the Depo shot in high school, and a side effect she had was really really dry skin, and her face would break out a lot.

Hi there.

I've been on the depo shot since March 2006. I've had it 3 times. Now i have decided to come off it.

It suited me well! The only side effects i had were a few more spots and i put on a little bit of weight. On the plus side, I didn't have a period the whole time i was on it and my libido increased no end!!!

My periods have returned (i think - I have been bleeding for the past 10 days) just 16 weeks after my last shot.
I have heard loads of horror stories from people who have had really big problems with the injection.

Please speak to your GP about ALL the pros and cons before making your mind up.

I had just one shot which lasted 12 weeks, it is injected up to day 5 of your period to cover you. I bled for a whole month when I started it, 6 weeks without then I bled for 6 weeks. Have stooped it now, due to TTC, but I had to visit the doc to stop the bleeeding and was put on some hormone tablets to stop it. Gained 7Ibs, not through eating more, through the injection, my eating habbits havent changed since I lost a lot of weight, so I wouldnt purposely put it back on.

I wish I hadnt bothered now, should have used the pill. But give your self a break, say 3 months of using condoms? Talk to your partner and explain why you want to use this method, and I'm sure he'll be happy with it, for a little while, lol.

Good luck

I was on the Depo injection for about 4 years and I didn't have any problems. It stopped my periods for the whole time I was on it. But everybody is different. The Depo generally has the same side effects as the pill. It worked for me so I am happy to recommend it. Speak to your nurse though.

I tried the Depo shot twice and had bad experiences both times. I gained 50lbs within a month and a half the first time and am still trying to get rid of it and the second time I had continous spotting for about 3 months and then never got a period and gained another 20lbs. They say everyone is different but i have yet to meet someone who hasn't had problems.

I didnt get on with the depo at all, but I have some friends who get on with it fine. I had really bad mood swings, bled nearly constantly (I had a couple of 6 week periods-nice!), got HUGE spots on my face that were more like boils, and put on loads of weight. I would go and talk to your Dr. or Nurse about it, tho, if you are serious. It's a bit weird and concerning that you've had 5 periods this month...You'de best get that checked out before you change your contraceptive, anyhoo.

I can tell you my experience with the depro shot ... and please don't take this completely to heart because EVERYONE is different. I think a lot of my problem was that I'd always had normal periods and I react badly to excess hormones and what have you. I only got the shot one time and I ended up with a 'period' (bleeding, etc.) for a month. I never got it again. The doctor said that was normal sometimes and that it would clear up, but I didn't want to chance it. It sounds like you may have better results with the shot since you're having troubles with the pill. Give it a shot (no pun intended!). Best of luck! :)

ive used depo provera since 1998, i started with a 12 weekly jabs but ended on 10 weekly due to severe periods (high amount of bleeding and lengthy) i was on the jabs for 5 years then went onto implanon which is basically the same without the jabbing stays in for 3 years but a lower dose of progestogen. the jabs taken at 10 weekly intervals will stop your periods, but the body will gradually gain weight and you will also have a higher sex drive. weight gain can be managed with exercise. there are many websites with info on progestogen only products about pros and cons long term use of progestogen only products cause at an annual rate of 3% reduction in bone density. for which i have decided to stop using them. but i will say this they have a 99% accuracy record and the 1% is usually cus people have misjudged renewal dates for injections or have been taking heavy medications. if this sounds too much for uinjections or implant there is also an iud with progestogen inside talk to your doctor or sexual health clinic see which ones they offer and discuss them with you there are many more things besides depo or progestogen only drugs. ive given a few links to look at one contains detailed info into depo provera as a PDF

Depo can cause weight gain and can cause osteoporosis if you are not taking calcium supplements. On the good side, it can rid you of a montly period and offers protection for three months. (remember not to have unprotected sex, it does not protect against STDs) I was on it for a while and it was nice not to have periods, however, I did gain weight..and i think it also gave me mood swings. Good luck!
