I was a foriegn German Exchange Student when I was in High School and I was told that during Christmas they would play "Find the Pickle" (I can't remember, what they called it in German) N E wayz, they would hide a small pickle in the Christmas tree and the kids would make a game out of it to see who could find it.

It's been since 1996, so my memory of why and the significance to this game is foggy. U might want to try the link the other person gave to see if u can search the pickle game.

My husband's Family would have a great get together dinner and exchange gifts the night before Christmas then go to Midnight Mass They did NOT celebrate on Christmas Day as we do here in America
The "pickle" game,is this: they hide a pickle(used to be a real one,now most use glass ornament) deep in the tree and the child who finds it gets a "special" gift that the others do NOT get

In Germany, the Christmas season starts with the Christmas Markets that sell spiced wine, and handmade gifts. They have St. Nicholas day where the kids put out their shoes. If the children have been good, St. Nicholas comes and brings them presents and small toys. If the child has been bad then Schwartz Peter comes and leaves switches in the shoes to spank the child for not being good. Then on Christmas Eve, the Kristkind, (Christ Child), comes and and brings presents for the family. Christmas Day is usually reserved for Church Services and immediate family. The day after Christmas is also a holiday that is devoted to spending time with extended family and friends.

properly, there is a few talk of a German pickle ornament custom... You carry slightly glass pickle on the tree, and the first toddler to discover it receives an more advantageous little present, or the first adult to discover it receives a 365 days of luck...
