I live in Florida, so I expect snakes, but I would like to discourage the poisoneous ones from coming in my yard. Thankfully, the dogs went wild barking, so we knew it was there. I would hate for one of the kids to come upon one, or even my dogs to get bit. I heard that moth balls works. Is this true????

There is a powder you can put down around the perimeter of your property that discourages snakes. I used it to keep the snakes away from our chickens (eggs) and it worked wonders. I can't remember what it's called. Check the internet for snake repellents and do some research.

Good luck!

Also, now that I think about it, dogs and cats have a different tolerance for snake bites. I have a dog and a cat who have both been bitten by copperheads, they just had a some swelling and were fine. Of course, I would worry if I were you but maybe that'll set your mind at rest a little bit.

There's not too much you can do. Snakes like warm areas, so you could relandscape your yard to make it cooler (plant shady trees, keep your lawn well watered). However, that would probably decrease your visibility, which is your best defense against a snake. I don't know the specifics of your yard, so I can't provide any detailed information. You could try lining your yard, if it's small and enclosed, with a narrow ditch of water or short metalic wall. These may not stop a snake from entering your yard if it has reason to, but they may deter a wandering snake away from your home.

Be careful with chemical or sonic repellents; they may negativly effect your dogs or other animals.

I hate snakes and feel for you very much. Snakes because of their soft underbelly's don't like to crawl over rough surfaces. Such as Rocks,Rope, and you can even try mounting a really good statue of an Owl. They are the natural predator of a snake and they don't like them. Hope this helps in some way. I don't know about moth balls sorry.

If snakes are hanging around it's because there is prey available for them or good hiding places or water readily available.

Trap, kill, or otherwise remove any prey animals and eliminate hiding places like rock and wood piles and keep the vegetation trimmed to make the area unappealing to snakes, which like to remain hidden. Don't allow water to stand where it can draw thirsty snakes.

Moth balls do work. Sprinkle them around the edges of your yard.or anywhere the snakes would come.
