Jim Crow laws established legal segregation in the south. You've seen pictures of "colored only" signs on water fountains, bathrooms, etc. Those could be put up because of jim crow laws.
The link I'm adding is actually a website that can be used with a PBS special called "The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow". If you can see it, do! Its a great special.
