would you support the idea of an upgrade in how we as a community hold the news media accountable for what it reports?

And if they report unchecked facts recieve fines that hurt and repeat offendors get shut down after three warnings?

And if you would not support that ...would you be willing to have a picture of YOUR face on the front page of the New York Times tomorrow morning with lies, goossip and unchecked fact written about you , and if not, why not?

first, the New York Times is a very prestigious newspaper, and most high quality newspapers do have fact checkers and good reporting.

also, more often than not when a journalist of a credible newspaper is found to have made up any element of their story they are reprimanded as seen fit by each individual newspaper.

and you can't punish a whole newspaper for the actions of one.

maybe you need to up the quality of what you are reading. the tabloids and such other publications are the ones that typically don't do fact checking. and there are already laws in place to protect the public from slander and what not. yes, it's hard to prove, but it's hard to prove to prevent people from saying something isn't true when it is.

I would definitely support it. I am glad that I am not someone who has everything I do blown up, altered and printed for all to see. I do not think it should be okay to report gossip that is not true or only some of the facts are known. It really should not be everyone business what people do in their own home or when they go out on the town unless it is hurting someone. Court documents from ones divorce should not be reported on. When a reporter likes someone the story goes in favor of the person they like and when they do not like someone they write stories to show a different view of that person. There is so much in the tabloids that is untrue or lacking important facts giving people bad reputations and forcing them to defend themselves when it is really none of our business even if it is true.

When a rumor goes around at work about me I get very upset and feel like I need to run around and let everyone know that it did not really happen or it did not happen the way it is going around. If I had to read magazines stating untrue stories about me I would pro bally run around making a fool of myself letting everyone know they were lies.

I totally agree! I think tabloids should be banned. There has to be a better way to get the "scoop". I understand that people just want to know things, its stupid but they will always want to know what is going on in other peoples personal lives. I just wish they could do it in a more tactful manner...like asking the person straight up instead of snooping through garbage and hiding outside your hotel room Its just awful what they put people through. Damn the paparazzi! Save the empire!

How would you prove they got the facts wrong? They wouldn’t reveal their sources and even if they did their sources could be misinformed - then have they done anything wrong?

I like the idea, but I doubt it could be implemented. There is nothing BUT tabloid news any more. You can’t believe anything you read and only half of what you see.

I think it's a good idea to hold them accountable. And I think those stupid tabloid papers should be illegal.
