Subpoenas are issued by a judge, so it's actually a court order for you to appear. If you don't, you can be found in contempt of court and the judge can swear out a warrant for your arrest (and most judges do just that). It's not worth it for you to go to jail over this, so make sure you appear. If something of an urgent or emergency nature comes up, 99 times out of 100 the court will work with you if you call in advance and explain the problem.

If you do not show up the court may issue sanctions against you including contempt of court and other remedies. Consult a lawyer in the jurisdiction in which you were subpoenaed for a complete answer. Sanctions may vary. Also, the lawyer may be able to advise you whether the subpoena complies with all legal requirements.

Well, if you have been give a subpoena you kind of have to show up for court. The judge can get a little peeved if you do not show up. Can land you a little contempt of court or a bench warrent.

Subpoena's are not a request for you to show up in court. They are a demand. If you don't show up they can and in most cases will get a warrant for your arrest.

If you were served with a subpoena and you don't show up, you will most likely be found in contempt and wind up in jail.

You will be charged with Contempt of Court (2a:10-1) and a warrant will be issued for your arrest. If there is enough evidence that your testimony is vital and that you deliberately missed your court date, you may also be charged with obstruction of justice and other charges.
