If it beeps while doing this, re-seat the RAM modules, if it doesn't your power supply is on it's way out.

It's hard to Iron out exactly what could be wrong with your computer from this amount of information. Does the Hard Drive start up (whirring noise)?

I suspect that your hard drive is either not connected properly or has expired (as they do after a few years). When you next turn it on, hit F8 until the options menu comes up. Select safe mode. If your computer starts up properly now, then re install windows and your problem should be fixed. If not, I would suspect that you will need a new hard drive. However without looking at it, I can not tell you for certain.

If it's getting through the initial BIOS screen with no errors, you might have either a corrupt operating system or a bad hard drive. If you don't have a repair CD from your computer's manufacturer, you can try reloading the operating system. Windows XP will give you the option of "Repair" instead of wiping out what's on the drive.

I had a similar problem when I tried installing Fedora Core 5 on my machine. Somebody finally added acpi=off to the bootup sequence.

(FC6 doesn't seem to have this problem, though.)

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
