If you're worried about quality try using a buying agent or http://www.sgs.com/
Don't pay everything up front if you can avoid it.

Ask for references.

It is really best to visit.

As for costings. Take the cost of the items + all carriage costs x
by the % duty. Don't forget carriage charges and storage costs at this end.

Let the supplier know it's in his interest to keep you happy as there will be future business if he does.
A good website is: http://www.alibaba.com/

Cost when goods reach you must be:
Cost of good a port in China including handling charges + shipping cost (normally per container load) + insurance (for transport by sea) + port and handling charges at destination port (check if this is included already in the cost quoted by your shipping agent) + customs duty + transportation, handling etc from the port upto destination.

Research the company:
1. Ask the company for reference of other buyers in other countries
2. Try to get Dun n Bradstreet report
3. Check with Exporters association, furniture manufacturer association, industry chambers to verify the supplier also to get more suppliers.
4. Visit big furniture shops and look around for manufacturer stickers (mmade in china) and note down the manufacturer.

Check http://www.Alibaba.com

They can point you towards suppliers.

Order samples and get shipping quotes.

http://www.atacarnet.com is a service I heard about but have not checked out yet.

FedEx or UPS might be able to answer duty and tax questions.
