Density is ratio of mass to volume. Specific gravity is ratio of density of a material to that of water.

.....and since the density of water (@ 4decrees Celsius) is 1g/cm^3 the density of a substance and its specific gravity should be the same number. the only difference is that specific gravity doesn't have any units (like g/cm^3)
