The UK (and other allied powers) were loaned equipment without the need necessarily to repay - a problem that had occurred at the end of WWI. In the end, some payment had to be made over a period of time, and the UK will complete repayments on the 31st of this month! Yippee!!! Then we will be free of any obligation to Uncle Sam
