I think some minerals, like baking soda. But if you cut the base at an angle, this will help the most, as there is more surface area to absorb the water. I have seen some products available commercially, too. I would think sugar would help... this is what plants produce, but use glucose.

the best thing to do to keep your christmas tree alive longer is just to keep it in plain water, and keep the water fresh. many people say to put aspirin or sugar into the water. however, when the water has a lower concentration of water (because its mixed with sugar or aspirin) the water within the tree's cells will diffuse out of the cells to create equilibrium. Osmosis, the diffusion of water, is when water moves from an area of higher concentration of water to lower concentration. With a lower concentration being outside the tree's cells, alot of the water will leave the tree.

Buy a bottle of asprin and grind it into a podwer and mix in a little into the water your storing the tree in. If you'd rather not to that then try going to a plant store, somewhere that specializes in things like this. (not like wal mart where they get the first associate to work it *no offense to wal mart people*) they do Sell food andplant treatments that soecialize in keeping plants alive and around the christmas season they have things to keep christmas trees greener longer. Just call around your local stores(i can't remember the name of the product for the life of me though)

Home Depot sells a liquid and a powder that you can add to the tree water and supposedly makes the tree last longer. We bought the liquid stuff and it cost $1.50 or so. You add two tablespoons for every gallon of water, so it goes a long way.

2 regular aspirin like Bayer or you can also buy stuff to put in the water, but Soda(aka 7up,Sprite,etc) might draw bugs or ants to the water so that isn't a good idea
