petrol are by far the best but if you live in an ordinary street your neighbours will hate you. they are very noisy . So you need to take them to a special track. You also need to handle and store petrol, which is dangerous.
Battery are good, you can use them indoors , in the street wthout annoying too many people either.
Petrol are very fast, much faster than battery.
Petrol is a better way of storing energy than a battery, which is why all this is.
Your first remote control car should be battery until you see if you like this hobby enough. Petrol cars are for the big boys.

Better off with Nitro (petrol) cars, more speed, depending on guage size, easy replacements/parts etc.
Only downfall are the batteries - for controls and/or battery controlled cars etc! The nitro fuel is reasonably priced but it does last a while though! More of an expensive outlay for the nitros but well worth the investment - IMHO!
Best invest in a good battery charger and rechargable batteries.

Gas powered cars need to be tuned alot...once when they are cold and then when they are hot. The engines are very tricky for beginners.
The gas powered trucks are very fast and require nothing more than adding fuel for an all day run outside.
Electric cars are easy maintenance but they require alot of extra batteries to have fun all day. In general they aren't as fast as the gas powered vehicles so pick your friends wisely because if they have gas powered vehicles they will spank you every time.

Nitro are better if you want longer running time but they are more expensive and noisy
Electric are very quiet, can be used indoors but have a very short run time (about 10 minutes) and it takes forever to keep charging the battery.
I'd say get a second hand electric tamiya to see if you like R/C driving, get some experience then upgrade to nitro

More speed on the petro / gas operated. Quicker repeat session.
Cons: Fumes / exhaust by products cause car to get oily.
Higher speed causes greater damage on crashes.
Less speed on battery. Less run-time on quick recharges.
Cleaner / cheaper to to operate.
