I can be perfectly awake all day long, but when I get behind the wheel I get really tired (not to the point where I am sleeping, but drowsy). I have seen no difference if I have gotten enough sleep the night before or not. I am horrible for long distant driving because of this. I wonder if listening to music might be a reason, or maybe I just get bored, or maybe I'm just weird.

Because you are relaxed and the humming noises can relax your mind. You are staring in one direction and the movement of a car can make anyone sleepy, why do think so many kids fall asleep in cars. They are relaxed and its quiet. Something to help with this and it works for me, I eat little snacks while I'm driving and if I feel sleeping I eat some more. Stuff like nuts and fruits. Eating wakes our brain up.

This "sleep" effect is usually assoiciated with a mild for of hypnotism. The passing of the road, lines on the road, trees are blurry on your periferal vision causing your brain to "see" the same image constantly with a strong repatition. Your years hear the the drone of your car and the repeated noise of cars passing you. All of this adds up to a similar effect of a heart beat to a child or the sound of a metronome. It usually helps to take a small break and get out of the car. Trust me your not wierd nor are you allone

To be honest it is a normal reaction because your eyes are focused on the cars in front of you and the traffic and turns, this causes your eyes to feel exhausted because of having to strain. Music can enhance this sensation as long as you find it soothing and relaxing thus creating the sensation of being tired, as well you should note that the sound of the running engine acts as white noise (soothing sounds for the human brain) creating an intense sensation of feeling tired. I hope that helps.

I do the same thing. I think it's because driving is so boring. I usually have to drive with the window open for cold air to hit me or use the air conditioner on freezing in the summer.

This is common, as what you are doing is staring and concentrating alot. Motorway driving is worse, as driving along windy roads makes you pay more attention and be more alert.

Be careful when you drive....I often will stare at the road when I drive but I make sure I stop because it's dangerous.

I would check to see if there is a medical reason. It could be that you have a type of Narcolepsy.
