Batteries. A lot of devices need (or could use) batteries. An easy example is implantable defibrillators, which use a little electric shock to reset the heart's rhythm if it goes kooky. Since these batteries are close to the heart and require surgery to implant, you want them to last a really long time, be very very very reliable (deaths and lawsuits if they fail), etc.

One company that's really big about them is Wilson Greatbach in Clarence, NY. One of the big people who works there on the batteries (the main developer) is Esther Takeuchi. Do a google or wikipedia search on either Wilson Greatbach or Esther Takeuchi to get started. Or on defibrillators....
