Business is bad and I cannot afford a new one. Now the resolution is moving from SVGA (good enough for me in the short term) to XGA. Are the old ones being thrown out by colleges, schools and businesses? (England)

Yes, check with universities in your area. They are replacing those old projectors. You may have to wait a while to get your hands on one though. :(
