I recently started a tow truck busniess in the Washington DC area and I am looking for work. I am interested in doing transporting between MD, DC, VA, DE, and PA. I would rather do that than roadside service. Any idea where to start?

Talk to the local police in your area. They contract different tow company's for accident clean up. There is big money in recovery, storage, fuel and other bio hazard clean up. Other than that, advertising and word of mouth is your only hope. A local company here where I live has a gimmick, and they do allot of business. They advertise $25 tow for the first 25 miles. After the 25 miles they soak you and they charge $50 a day storage but they are all ways busy.

Have you done things like run your ad in the yellow pages, do you have business cards or pamphlets describing your services?

Advertising!
Start driving around --- I'll assume you've got your business name and phone number on your truck? This is the best free advertising you will get....

Marketing for referrals!
Start going to visit local garages and Car Dealerships with Body Shops in the areas you want to do business....Make sure you are talking to a decision maker and not just a mechanic or other worker. Explain your services, drop off a few business cards. Tell them you'd like referalls. Also, you may want to ask if they have a preferred vendor or contract for tow jobs for their clients?

Network, Network, Network.... This is what it's all about....Look for ANY PLACE you can drop off or hang a business card...Get a T-Shirt made with your logo---wear it....

first you have to get all the permits from the states you want to operate in , and find out what thier laws are , in each state , contact the state transportation department for each state ,they should be able to guide you through all the red tape.

Start by going to your local car dealers, they do dealer trades all the time, and it might be better for them to send you than sending their porter or one of the salesmen and taking them off the floor.
