We're given this false, surreal idea that celebrities in Hollywood, due to their fame and fortune, are in essence perfect and without problems - or if they do have problems, they just have to snap their fingers and everything is solved.
So when we see a tabloid exclaiming the news of a celebrity being a religious nutso, an anorexic, a drug addict, a drunk, having gained sixty pounds, it makes us feel like yes, they are people too. And since they have so much money and power, it's easy to feel justified in slamming them.
I'm not saying it's right, but that tends to be the reason, I've noticed.

I keep asking myself the same question. Most of the "celebrities" whose faces we see regularly in the tabloids, and whose wacky antics we hear about on the news, appear ready to do just about anything to stay in the forefront of public attention, even when it means behaving in ways that would land most of us in jail. Even when some of them do get arrested for something, it's no big deal. They know they aren't going to get fired from their excessively paid line of work. There's an old showbiz saying, that there's no such thing as BAD publicity, and even a movie star from a past era (can't think who she was now) was reputed to have once told somebody "My dear, if there's one thing worse than being talked about, it's NOT being talked about.
Unfortuntely, as long as the general public remains so drop-jawed,starryeyed fascinated by these "cartoon characters" they are going to go right on with their nutty shinnanigans.

I would say that we're obsessed with celebrities because we love gossip and some one to talk about. It's always been this way. We may have a leader (elected or not) or some other public figure to look up to, but also to talk about behind their backs.

People love to see a train wreck. People love to build someone up just to set them up for failure. The media knows we love to see celebrities OD, get arrested, etc...That's why they "print it". Plus, America is filled with mindless drones who follow pop culture. We live in a society of idiots who are superficial and don't pay attention to real problems in the world.
