Going away at New Year. My family don't want friend and child to come (they think friend is controlling/difficult and they'll get lumbered dog sitting like last time). Friend knows we are planning something and has hinted they'd like to go to same place. How do I handle this without hurting feelings. I can't keep avoiding them!

just tell your friend that your family have paid for the new year break for you and only want immediate family to be there to see the new year in together... then tell your friend that you could both arrange a spring break for you when the weather gets a bit better

Yes, just tell your friend it's a family vacation and you are all looking forward to spending time together as a family, if you mention it before they do it'll be much easier.
Say something like it is a shame your friend can't go this time as last time was fun. Then suggest that you should celebrate New Year together when you get back. And actually plan something you could do.

Make sure friend knows you are eager to see when you return, but the plan is a family plan only. Ask friend what their family plan is for the holiday and when can you get togeather as soon as you get back from the "family" thing.

Just explain its a family thing....much better than telling a pack of lies.Then tell your friend you will see them as soon as you get back.

Explain that it is a family get together only and apolagies that you will miss them over the new year but that you will catch up when you return.

be very honest w/ your friend let her know that she is still your friend and that you want to keep it that way but this is not a decission of your own and that she has to understand that this is a fam. thing she will understand give her the reasons too
