Because the second amendment lost it's meaning with invention and subsequent illegalization of the fully automatic firearm and was further undermined with the passage of the gun control act of 1968.

The second amendment is ment to insure that the people have the necessary tools to overthrow the government in the event that the government turns to tyranny.

We can, we just have to wait until 2008 to do it. If however, the government is taken over by an evil group, like religion, and they destroy Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms by using the coercive power of the state to shove their god down every ones throat, the term "When in the course of Human events .." becomes operative again.

We can, every 2,4, and in some cases 6 years when elections are held for political office. Problem is, people don't care enough to know about who they are putting into office and so thus, the circle of greed perpetuates. These people are not in government so as to do good for the rest of the country. They want the power and love the power.

Its 10 mins since you posted this question and I am not sure I should answer it because the knock on the door should be any time now. Having said that, the frustrations many of us feel about this inept administration have driven us to think worse.

You can. Just register to vote and work for the election of the opposition candidate. When they win you have successfully overthrown the government.

Start with the grassroots campaign...get the local officeholders involved... get the congress involved...you may get your wish...
