No way. They told me that it would be the most popular sport back when I was growing up, but it is still at the same level of popularity 25 years later. And to those who say, "more kids play soccer than any other sport"...that may be true, but what ELSE are they going to play when they are 5? More kids also QUIT soccer than any other sport.

No, it will never be as huge here as in other parts of the world. That's not a bad thing, as there are many more countries than people think where soccer is not the top sport (China, India, Japan, Australia, most of the Caribbean, Canada, and the US).
No, it will not take over the NFL but it will have its own niche in the American sport scene. Unlike other countries, we have more than one major sport which competes for the almighty $.

not a chance in hell. i keep reading on here where people say soccer is getting more and more popular, but i don't see it. people say because so many small kids play it, they'll grow up to be soccer fans, but it doesn't work that way. little kids have been playing soccer here forever, because mothers don't want their small kids playing football, because it's too rough and dangerous. that's where the term 'soccer mom' comes from. but by the time these kids get to high school age, they drop soccer and the girls move on to cheerleading, volleyball, field hockey, and basketball. the guys turn to football. high school football on friday nights is as american as apple pie. soccer has been around since before football, so if it was going to be big here, it would have caught on a long time ago. it's just not gonna happen, period.
and by the way, spurs fan, you CAN play football when you are 6. there are pee wee leauges and pop warner leauges all across the country, as well as thousands of 'pick-up' games played on corner lots after school. when are YOU going to face the fact that we don't like that boring, sissy game of yours. football will always rule here. soccer sucks. sorry, but it does.
lawn jockeys answer makes no sense. NASCAR has no 'natural stoppages' and it has the 2nd highest TV ratings in america. they just go to commercial at scheduled intervals and it works out great. they could do the same thing with soccer if they wanted. the fact that there are no 'natural stoppages' in soccer has absolutely NOTHING to do with it's lack of popularity.

Nope. American football is a much bettet spectator game, and the game itself is superior! In soccer, goals are scored somewhat at random depending how the ball bounces, and penalties are assessed at the whim of the referee depending who is better at acting. In football, you can tell when someone is about to score, and penalties are not as likely to change a game.
Other than that, soccer is a pretty simple game, where the total number of tactics is limited, compared to football, where there are many more skills on display in an assortment of situations.

NO!!! i hope not...american football is much more entertaining and we here in america know and understand what sports are better such as basketball, football, and baseball rather than euro sports like soccer, cricket, or other wierd sports. with the NFL growing and the talent rising, soccer won't ever be as big in the US as it is in Europe.

I think there may be room for soccer to be more prevalent in the future but we Americans do love our football!! So I can't see it going anywhere anytime soon! It's the only sport I watch on a consistent basis.

It'll never happen as long as TV revenue has anything to do with it. Football has so many natural stoppages of play that it's perfect for commercial breaks. I don't think soccer - even if they sold on-field "product placement" - could ever match those revenue streams.

Yes i think it will, every country in the world plays soccer, so more and more people in America will watch it and start to get into the sport, plus most sports people start out with is soccer, because im pretty sure u cant play football when u are 6.
Americans need to stop being so close minded and just face the facts, soccer is a better, more entertaining sport
