I'd have to say that anyone who leaves their newborn alone in a room with ANY type of dog or puppy is an idiot. I wouldn't dream of doing such a thing.

Not only would I not let my newborn in a room alone with a pit bull, but ANY puppy, no cats either!
Puppy's treat babies as another animal. Without the guidance of the owner a puppy does not know the difference between another animal and a baby.
Pit bull puppy or not. This story gets much more publicity and people talking if they say pit bull puppy then a cute little lab puppy, lab puppies will do this too...If the article said a fuzzy little kitten laid on the newborns face and the baby was smothered this would not get people talking again like a pit bull puppy.
No I do not own a pit bull, just a watcher of people and society...

OH how sad. I hadn't heard that yet. I would never leave my baby unsupervised ever! With any animal. Babys cant brush off a rowdy dog like we can. I dont think the reason why this happened was because the puppy was a pit bull, but because puppies chew on things. You know that baby was crying and crying. Where in the heck were the parents? Unbelievable, I'm dumbfounded.

I am not going to count the two fishes in the equation but even without them I would vote for waiting. Have the baby first get everyone on a livable schedule and then see if your wife really still wants the puppy. She might be so exhausted after having baby at least the first 6 months or so that she'd not have much left to spend training a puppy. It has nothing to do with waiting for the baby to walk lots of puppies and babies have grown up together but your 6 cats need attention too (not counting fishes)

No, and the reason isn't because the puppy was a pitbull. I have a three month old and two of the sweetest dogs ever and don't leave them in a room alone with her. I just can't predict how they will react to her if she should cry because they have never been around babies. Also, they could do something, not intending to be malicious, that could hurt her. Like I said, I don't believe that they would ever do anything to her...but it's not worth the chance that some freak occurrence happen.

If I had raised the bulldog from a puppy and knew that the dog was very well tempered I would leave it in the room with my baby.Bulldogs aren't bad dogs like everyone likes to say. They only have bad owners,They do have to be raised a little different from other dogs, they need more Patience.Any dog can turn on the owner or any one else.

I'm 33 and I wouldn't even be in a room alone with a pitbull, let alone leave my baby or any of my kids alone with one. Those dogs are terribly dangerous and people just can't seem to get that through their head!

That is VERY sad! I don't think it matters *what* breed the dog is, it should always be supervised with young children. I remember a story in the news several years ago where a family dog (?Airedale Terrier?) picked up the infant in it's mouth and shook it like a rag doll. I don't remember if the baby lived or died. Our dog has NEVER bitten, snapped, or even growled at anyone. He was even afraid of our fat, lazy cat, and she was completely declawed! But I still tell the kids that they have to respect his space and his toys ~ and to play with him *nicely*! But a defenseless infant? Very sad.

Babies should never be left alone with any pet. Not just because they might intentionally harm the baby either.
I used to have a cat that used to lie across my face while I slept. If she did that around a baby she could intentionally smother the child.
That being said, animals like rats, pythons and pit bulls are particularly dangerous to children. I would never own one at all, much less allow it to play with a baby.

That is horrible. I would never stop crying if that happened to my newborn baby. I would kill the person responsible for leaving my baby with the dog in the first place.
