Awesome question! Studying in your own country has it's benefits, but at the same time, most students will study 12 years straight in their own country - why not take a year and try something different. I think the main reason is to force yourself outside of your comfort zone. When you are doing things that are new and unfamiliar to you (like living in a new culture) you learn a lot faster, easier and you learn things about yourself that you would never have figured out staying within your comfort zone. I know for a fact, I live in Oregon (USA) and studied abroad for 3 months in Costa Rica during high school, then went to university in California and studied for 6 months in Spain. Not to mention I have worked for an international, study abroad organization (afs.org). It was by far the BEST decision I have ever made. I think it would be hard to find someone who has studied abroad that disagrees with me. I'm also scared to think about the closed-minded person I probably would've become, if I hadn't of studied abroad.

Also, for a strictly academic standpoint, most educational systems in the world are better than the education offered in the USA. In September of 2006 the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development released a study saying that the USA speands more $$ than most developed countries on primary and secondary education, yet continues to have the largest class sizes, lowest test scores and highest drop-out rates. Even developing countries like China are scoring better than American students and you better believe that those students are starting to apply to American colleges - making the college application process even more competitive than it already is.

Another good point to study abroad, it looks great on a resume, college application, etc. etc. I used to work in a college admissions office and admissions officers are looking for what makes students stand apart. Lastly high schools in America have taken to grade inflation, now everybody has a 4.0 (gross generalization, but you get the idea) and 1300 or better SAT scores- what is an admission's officer to do? Well things like Study Abroad show them you have the personal motivation and strength to be successful at a rigorous university, not to mention having second language abilities and making fellow Americans aware of other cultures and their beliefs.

I could go on and on about the benefits of study abroad, but I could probably make a shorter list of reasons why you shouldn't. I hope this answered has helped! Cheers!

There are many advantages to studying abroad. It expands your horizons, intoduces you to new cultures and peoples. I am not an avid traveller and yet wanted to see and explore the World before I settled down to the routine of life. I guess it all depends on the field of study. For law it would be important to study in the country you plan to practice, however, if like me you are in the sciences, location is independent of future work. So if possible I strongly recommend it!

Television and Movies have twisted reality and they make it seem totally possible that if you go to another country odds are good that you will hook up with some hot sexy co-ed for a semester. Welcome to the reality of gulibility
