I am afraid of mentally ill/slow people. Is there anyone else like me or am i just weird. Is there such a phobia? I don't know why i am. I can break it down logically why i shouldn't be but i still am.

I'm not trying to be mean. And i didn't say i hate them or that i look down on them. I acknowledege that everyone is different and by trying to bash me isn't a good way to help me figure out why i am afraid. So if you have nothing useful to say then move on to the next question..*cough* grlnextdoor8852 *cough*

So i googled this fear to see if it existed. I found that this fear is associated with violence towards these people. And i want it to be known that i would never and have never physically hurt people like this. As a matter of fact i do recall helping a girl in my gym class that was somewhat slower than other girls and she was very nice. So i guess afraid woould be the wrong word. I just don't know how to react to these people because I DON'T KNOW too much about them.

People have different fears so you are normal i know a few people that are scared of mentally challanged people. I mean your phobia is not bad. Some people are scared of pickles and pennies and birds. My boyfriend sister does not like clowns or lifestyle images like the Burger King "King" that scares her to death...she hates that guy.

I'm 38 and I do not like being in the dead of night. There is not any specified intent as to why I am. I simply am. It's extra of being uncomfortable in the dead of night than afraid. Perfectly average mostly except you've got a distinct present like a 6th experience that you're afraid to recognize. Hope this is helping! P.S. You're best insane for considering you will be insane:)

I don't think it's a real phobia. You're probably afraid because you don't know how to approach people like this.
Mentally ill people are not always freaking out. If you treat them respectfully and like a normal person, you should be OK. There are probably a lot of mentally ill people you talk to on a normal basis who you aren't even aware that they're mentally ill!

That has got to be the stupidiest question on the planet you are a very harsh girl and should be a shamed of yourself.
Just put it this way,
IT COULD BE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How would you feel if someone wrote that question about you?
THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!!!

Fears don't have to be logical, they just ARE. I'm afraid of horses and have no reason to ever be. I'm afraid of guns and i was a cop. You have to learn to rule the fear and not the other way around.

If you have never had to deal with a mentally ill or slow person, it is normal to be afraid of them because you were taught not to stare and stuff like that.

you are not alone because many people don't know how to react to abovementioned group. Try to be yourself next time you encounter this type of individual and not think of yourself but think of how fortunate you are and try putting your energy into giving that person a reason to smile.
