The lion is generally called 'king of the jungle' because the males have that magnificent mane, which gives them some regal cache', and since lions are more active and operate in the open during the day, people see them more often than other top predators like leopards.

Their pride structure makes them seem more like a human society as well, with an obvious dominant figurehead leader (who, appropriately enough, doesn't really do much actual work).

The regal poise and grace of the lion makes them more appealing to humans than say, hyenas or African wild dogs too.

All of these have combined to give them the poetic, and completely non-scientific appellation 'king of the jungle'.

because at one time there was more then lions just the African lion. lions were all over Europe, Africa, India and other middle eastern countries. and before humans came in and destroyed everything, certain places had dense jungle. (like India and Africa.) the term "king of the jungle" is just a saying that is thousands of years old. it also could have something to do with the white Europeans coming into foreign lands and seeing large felines and thing they are also lions.
