I don't think there is a set age, because obviously all babies are different, but what should I be looking for? Is it when he can pull himself to a standing position?

Yes when he can stand is the time to do it. Otherwise it would be dangerous to him to be that high up because he could crawl out.

My kids are teens now but what I would look for is when you notice he's trying to sit up while holding on to your leg or furniture, then you will be ahead by maybe a week or a month or so, because they can hold on to that bar and pull them self's up. By the way when my kids started to climb out of the crib, I got them beds right away, I was so afraid of them falling out. I would rather march them back to their bed, then stand by the door and watch them climb out, over and over again, by the way, a real cute picture would be him/her climbing out of the crib with out them knowing it. I have a picture of them both doing it. It's so funny, they both look like their getting away with murder. Good Luck.

I'd say if he stands up and the top of the rail is below chest height, it's time to lower the mattress.

yes when he is able to pull himself up would be a good time to do it also stand him up in the crib. if the bars come to his belly button its time to lower it. even if he can't stand yet he may try it soon. good luck and congrats on the baby.

Lower the crib mattress when he's able to sit up on his own.

When he starts to pull himself up then lower it so he cant climb out. Or you could do it before then to prevent anything from happening!
