The protagonist in the Hound of the Baskervilles?

I need to know the main character in The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. I think it is either Dr. Watson or Sherlock Holmes, but I do not know which one to choose. I am writing an essay in which I am discussing the main chracters traits.

In this particular Holmes novel, it's Watson. Not only is he the narrator, as usual, but it's his own activities he's speaking of in the absence of Holmes (throughout the middle of the novel).

It's most definately Watson. Sherlock Holmes stories are always told from a point of view of a consistent character in all the stories, and that's Watson. You could say that he's the protagonist in all Sherlock Holmes stories as an observer and narrator, and often someone who comes to the rescue.

I'm not sure what the topic of your essay is, but if you are going to refer to the classic tales by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, you can't make reference to one of these characters without making reference to the other.

A good, humorous example of Watson's role in Holmes' legendary crime detection is a movie called "Without a Clue," (Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine). It's a parody that's suggests that Watson was the real brains behind the whole operation, and Holmes is just an actor hired by Watson to be a frontman. If you're a fan, you'll love it (but chances are you've already seen it).

Another fact: Sherlock Holmes ranks among the top fictional cocaine addicts.
