Not all animals have middle fingers which are longer than the rest, but an important evolutionary stage in hominids was the ability to throw objects, and having a slightly longer middle fingers improved accuracy of the throw. Ask a baseball pitcher how important he thinks his middle finger is, and what would happen if it were shorter.
