If they make it, it's "Good job!". If they miss, it's "Good try!" It's all about supporting your teammate.

Giving each other high fives is encouraging and keeps the adrenaline going during a game. If the player makes a free throw, it is congratulatory. If a player misses, the high five is encouraging...the person is saying "don't worry about it...just keep trying" without having to say anything at all. It keeps the player optimistic and lets him/her know that missing happens and the team is not upset (which would definitely affect his/her game).

To encourage the player. Kind of like a "no big deal, shake it off" gesture. It doesn't do any good to dwell on it, because it won't help them make the second free throw.

Well, slapping hands is just keeping the player from going down, second, slapping hands doesn't necessarity mean good job

they do that to show support and to keep the players morale up so he doesn't get so down about missing the free throw

And yes, it does look gay when they pat each other on the butt, slap hands after free throws, or high five after a fast break.
