I was a junior in high school. I had turned to drugs and alcohol. I came home one Sat. night, and my Mom laid on the couch, which was quite unusual. I was high and drunk, so I just said "night Mom", I didn't wait for an answer, just up the stairs to bed. I laid down in bed, and it was as if someone threw cold water on Me. I realized something was wrong with Mom. I sobered up in a hurry. Ran down the stairs, and she was unconscious. She was bright red, and burning up with fever. I called for an ambulance. Later found out that she had an infection from a copper earring, and it was in her blood stream. Her fever was at near fatal temperatures. I vowed that night that I would never drink or do drugs again. It was time to grow up. I stuck to that vow until about 10 years ago, and usually one time a year, I enjoy a glass of white wine. So, thats my grow up in a hurry moment.
