Who do you think is the best Video Game character of all time?

I do a video game related top 10 for my school newspaper, and this subject will be in a future article. Obviously guys like Mario, Link, and Master Chief have to make the list, but who else?

ball from pong? no. despite being the second video game known, and the first mass marketed game, if this game didnt' exist, there would have been other games at some point in time. it is just rediculous to think that without that game, there would be no other games

on to the question! i can't necessarily go with "all time" because i can name so many that most people dont' even know who they are, have never heard of the game, etc.. i.e. Alys Brangwin

as much as i don't care for this sucky rpg - cloud or sephiroth from FFVII are well known - also, Rikku was the only tolerable character after 1994 in that final fantasy franchise, so she might make the list too

pac man - mostly targets older audiences, but everyone knows who he is

sonic may not be as ...popular.. now as he might have been, but he was still big - he even had like three animated cartoons

megaman has gone through so many transformations

pikachu, despite not having the fan base that they used to, gamefreaks still makes surprisingly good pokemon games.

samus from metroid. while i've never played this game, i hear great things.

scorpion or sub-zero from mortal kombat. in the original game, those two characters were more favored over the other five, generally

there is also this sucky game called kingdom hearts - the first game's main character is probably considered a good character.

i'm surprised i'm not seeing a million masterchief postings. Best video game character. Something that lives with ya.....Well you can't forget Solid Snake from the metal gear series, Dante from devil may cry, Both have awesome back stories, innovative game play. There are a million. (you could also do a top 10 side kicks of all time in our thing as well and think of the answers you'd get) or top 10 villians, classic battles you'd love to see and why the list goes on and on lol. BUt my personal fave would have to be...Ryu Hyabusa from the ninja gaiden series, all the way from NES to the X-BOX

Pac-Man (Pac-Man)
Master Chief (Halo)
Ryu (Street Fighter series)
Solid Snake (Metal Gear series)
Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)
Dr Gordon Freeman (Half-Life)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic series)

Most of these characters are either iconic (Sonic, Pac-Man), or the main characters in fairly engrossing stories in high-selling titles (Master Chief, Gordon Freeman, Solid Snake). Or, of course, both - Link and Mario. I included Ryu because SF2 was such a popular game, and he was the most central character.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Pikachu should probably be in there somewhere, just because of how popular Pokemon was.
