Was it "Diamond" Dave, Sammy, or that other guy?(Wasn't he from the band Extreme?)

Dave was the first, the originator. His voice shaped Van Halen's sound. Like it or not, the vocals are the most distinctive part of a band's sound and when a replacement is brought in, the band sounds different.

Dave is a showman, a front man. Whether you like him or not, Dave made their original sound.. to me.. that's Van Halen.

Would Led Zeppelin be Led Zep without Robert Plant?? No.. on his own, Robert Plant is himself. Playing with Jimmy Page, they are Page and Plant, not Led Zep..

Van Halen is Dave. Sammy is VanHagar.. simple as that.

I, myself don't care for Sammy. Talk about a guy who can't sing.. listen to "When it's Love".. Talk about mangling a high note! Jeesh!

Gary? I think I only heard his "Halen" song a couple of times.. definitely not him.

Diamond Dave Lee Roth

Diamond Dave was far better than Sammy. DLR had an ego the size of...well it was huge, but he was fun and outrageous and that makes for a rock star. Sammy just didn't have that quality and Van Halen was the worse for it.

Defiantly Diamond Dave. Van Halen puts out a hit every once in a while without him, with Dave it was one great song after another! They now got rid of Michael Anthony too, I really don't think Eddie Van Halen knows what he is doing anymore!

David Lee Roth, without a doubt. They had a few good songs back in 1986 with Sammy but David was HOT in the way that Sammy was NOT. VH ceased to exist for me anyway in the 90s so I didnt care who joined them during that decade.

I'm one of the few that like Sam and Dave equally with VH. DLR was more flamboyant in his performances, but he was there from the get go...and people love that and him. Sammy stepped in and gave VH a grittier sound that I loved. He was steadfast in what he did with that group, and he did a great job as frontman.

The "other guy" is Gary Cherone. He just wasn't as recognized as the other two were, so I don't mean to disrespect his contributions. I just don't know as much about them.

I'm running with David Lee. Van Halen reached the top of the charts when Roth was the frontman. Too bad ego got in the way between Roth and Eddie Van Halen. They worked so hard to get to the top. Once they reached it in 1984, bang, they split. Goes to show how success gets into one's head and destroys.
