For the same reason that when Saddam murdered his own people, we didn't criticize him or even mention it until years later when he invaded Kuwait. Saddam was being groomed to be the point-man in the middle-east for the USA.

Iran was a bigger threat back then. Now, after that sinks in:
Iraq DEVELOPED weapons against U.N. sanctions against it. They refused entry to U.N. inspectors, and when they did allow them in, they played games like, "you can look here, but not here." This went on for over ten years. Even the clinton administration knew he was developing WMD, which is why they bombed Iraq.

Why does the government allow the sale of firearms and arrest you if you threaten people with them.
Your logic is crap. We may have sold him the WMD's with the assumption he was going to use them for his own protection, not threaten us with them later and use them on his own people.
