Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. Goths tend to be kind, intelligent, non-violent, emotional, and artistic.

I'm from Michigan and for a brief period, I used to hang around that scene, although I never was really apart of it. What I took from these people is the following:

1. They don't like authority figures
2. They don't like mainstream anything
3. They tend to enjoy feelings of angst and tend to be melodramatic
4. They are very intelligent
5. They tend to not lighten up (no pun intended) and are overly serious acting
6. They don't seem to be very social with people who aren't considered goth.

Overall, I just see these people making an outward expressive statement to protest against mainstream America, including corporate greed, pop culture and things of the like. But, strangely, i've priced gothic clothes and they're pretty damn expensive so there may be a contradiction here. If the gothic subculture is primarily identified by their choice in fashion, then goths are no different than preps, emos, hip-hop kids and other subcultures.

It's funny because goths tend to think they're outside the box, but really it seems they're just another cliche subculture in America categorized by black eyeshadow, eyeliner, jet black hair or hair colored bright red, purple or whatever, stripes, platform boots, vinyl and studs.

But, not saying anything negative because part of my personality can sometimes be gothic in nature.

Please don't take offense, but the whole "goth scene" is a group of kids trying desperately to fit in with others all under the guise of being different...but still being just like everyone else....make sense.
The Gothic 'scene' as you put it fits with the innate human need to fit it...it allows another avenue for people who do not fit into pre-existing stereotypes to congregate with others who, because of non inclusion, non-interest or whatever, don't want to be associated with certain groups...this is also a place where alternative thinkers can gather with other alternative thinkers and have less risk of ridicule or excommunication.

So no, it is not a mentality of death ad destruction and nihilism...though there is indeed a bit going on...Goth is the logical answer to a society bent on creating clones (while spouting at the mouth about individuality) unfortunately, this reaction embodies, for the most-part, everything it proclaims to stand against...people who all dress the same, say the same things, watch the same movies, go to the same places...

Lets face it...Goth is just another version of Jock, Prep, Geek or Band squads...they just like more mascara.
