I was born to American parents in Garmisch in 1974. I'm now on the verge of getting married and have been considering honeymooning back "home". Am I even remotely eligible to obtain a German passport?

Probably not. In Germany, sorry to say that, you are only considered a German if you have German ancestors. The place of your birth is of no regard. (I believe you are automatically a US national if you are born within the US borders, correct? There is no such rule in Germany)

For the exact rules of receiving German nationality see the links below. Believe me, it is not worth the effort (and probably impossible) if you only wish to visit Germany once. As a US citizen, it will be easy for you to visit Germany as a tourist.

Have a nice honeymoon.

If your parents were legal residents, not just tourists or armed service members, you may have a chance.

the previous answerer was correct in that simply being born there does not afford citizenship, unlike the US.
