As a somewhat rabid Sox fan, I feel qualified to answer that question. First, I don't see it likely they'll acquire Matsuzaka, unless Scott Boras (who doesn't he represent?) is playing his usual stupid game where he waits until the last possible minute to squeeze as much money out of the team as possible. I don't think so, though. That's $51.1 million down the tubes. Second, Papelbon will likely become a starter. He was a phenomenal closer (most of the time), but you can never be sure. I mean, we started the '06 season with too many pitchers and ended up calling up people like Kason Gabbard! One thing is for sure, though--he'll be used. He's a great pitcher. He wouldn't surprise me as middle relief, setup, or if he eventually split the closing job with Hansen, who unfortunately can't start due to his strange mechanics in his delivery.

He'll be in the rotation, sans Matsusaka or not. Papelbon will be there also, along with Schill, Beckett, and Wakefield. Papelbon got overworked as a closer, which is why his shoulder started bothering him towards the end of the season. Lester will be coming back from chemo treatments, and management has stated several times that they don't want to do anything to chance hurting him, so having him go every fifth or sixth day would make sense.

Probably have him pitch from the bullpen to start, and oh yeah, do a ton of Public Service Announcments like Lance Armstrong.

I'm not sure why papelbon is a starter. You have schilling, wakefield, lester, beckett, and possibly the japanese guy. If matzusaka goes back to japan, then you can start papelbon. If not, he should close - you need a closer.

I think you start him in the minors and let him build his strength up. The Sox already have 5 starters and may have a sixth if they get the Dice-K thing done. (Yeah I know ...what 5? - Schilling , Wakefield, Beckett, Pappy and Okajima)

He will be in the starting rotation after they FINALLY give up on or (hopefully) get rid of Wakefield, the most useless starter in the majors. He's a 500 pitcher at BEST!!

I think they will put him in the bull pen, but that depends if they put papelbon back in the closer role, or if they sign Matsuzaka.
