The Democratic Party represents the liberal ideology of government. Generally speaking, liberals believe in policies that support civil liberties, democratic reforms, and use of government power to promote social progress. Since control of the House of Representatives and the Senate plays a big role in being able to implement these policies, one of the goals of the Democratic Party is to keep the Democrat leaders in Congress and also to get more Democrat leaders in Congress. Another goal is to get a Democrat elected as President, since the President has veto authority over Congress. So a big part of the money collected by the Democratic Party through private donations and fundraisers goes to campaign advertising and registering people to vote. BOTTOM LINE: The Democratic Party has these liberal beliefs, they want to get laws passed that support those liberal beliefs, and to that end they try to get a majority in Congress, a Democrat in the White House, and the support of the voters so they can get those laws passed.
