I think that Zakk Wylke I about the best out there. Joe Satriani, and Steve Vie come to mind too.

There are SO MANY great guitarists it's hard to say. But I'd go with Eric Clapton...one of the true pioneers of modern rock guitar. He was among those who started it first.

Zak Wylde is pretty good (good buddy just met him last week)
However... Eddie Van Halen can do more with 3 chords then a lot of those guys can do with an entire guitar.
