Some good things to remember are:
(a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
(a-b)^2 = a^2 -2ab + b^2
(a^2-b^2)= (a-b)(a+b)
(a+b)^3 = a^3 +3a^2b + 3ab^2 + b^3
If you get ax^2 +bx +c, check to see if b^2 > 4ac. If it is not, the expression cannot be factored using real numbers. If it is then see if b^2-4ac is a perfect square. if it is then take the sqrt, add -b, and divide by 2a. This will give you a root say 5.
Then x-5 has to be a factor.

For factoring, do you mean something like 2x + 4y = 2(x + 2y) ?
