No simple answer. In theory a long term investor buys a good stock and holds it as long as it stays a good company, for years. They don't worry about a particular day or even weeks as long as the fundamentals of the companies stay good. That is the Buffett plan, buy good companies cheap and never sell. All your other questions sound like day trading which is the opposite of long term investing or any investing. That is trading. In regards to the trading questions and changes in prices short term, I want to know why it is happening before I make any decisions. One cannot depend on market action alone if investing. Good Luck
