The Beatles looked great, they were interesting, clever, funny and harmlessly controversial. Lennon and McCartney wrote some great songs with interesting lyrics and melodies (George Harrison wrote some good ones too). Their albums (particularly from Revolver onwards) were original (they popularised the whole concept album notion). They used a fair amount of experimental music within the overlay of a pop music formula. No one else was doing that at that time.

They were all accomplished musicians (even Ringo who was/is a great drummer) and just sounded so fresh and dynamic.

It certainly is one of the biggest stories in the music history. One of the things that made them so popular was the fact they were determined. Another reason was the fact they were one of the few artist at that time that wrote their own material. Another reason for their popularity was it was at a time when Rock n Roll was getting bad press in the States and here came four young guys from England clean cut and well groomed as if they were going to a business meeting, playing Rock n Roll. A good indication that rock n roll was becoming popular in europe as well. And I guess the girls thought they were good looking as well. One thing is for sure we will never see another band create such an hysteria such as the as The Beatles did

Because at the time they were so different than anything being played. And then, once making an impact, they continued to change with the times constantly reinventing themselves as their audience did as well.
