I have always been curious...what do schools teach about the USA? In world History and Geography we learned about other nations, and thier cultures...how is the USA presented in your nation? Also, how do you personaly perseve the average American?

Yes, I can admit, this American can not spell ! lol *percieve* thank-you for the correction...also...I for one do not feeel that other people for other nations are envious (spelling again) of us...that is the arrogant attitude that SOME American's have that give us a real bad reputation. I am finding answers so far interesting...keep them coming!

I live in Italy, and I'm 18 years old...Being still in highschool, I think it depends much on the teacher's political points of view... Basically with Bush as president, people here are very blind and associate every American with Bush...So if they don't like Bush, they'll automatically hate the States, and every American...
I'm half American and I really feel offended but this stupid behavior... Thankfully I've been able to go on numerous trips to the States which showed me a very really different reality from the one depicted on Newspapers everyday, or taught us by our left-wing or right-wing teachers (both left wing people and extreme right people hate the USA, because the first associate USA with Bush and war, the second still hate the USA for having freed Italy from Fascism... ).
Americans are always depicted as stupid, ignorant, rude...
and always as Bush... being a convinced democrat I really can't wait to vote for the 2008 elections, hopefully for Hillary Clinton....so maybe Europeans will change their mind about USA and Americans.

American education is about 3 to 4 grades behind compared to the education in other countries. A high school education in other countries is equivalent to an elementary school education in America. I know, I have cousins who come to this country and are 15 years old in the 12th grade.

Guess you meant 'perceive' the average American, right?;)
Anyway, yes we do study USA, from its discovery on; USA are presented as one of the most developed countries in the world, and we study also their geography and politics. The average American...Don't know....average Americans look fine to me, don't see a big difference between them and me..my boyfriend is American and we share the same views and values....Americans are just less formal than us (Mediterraneans), they're more laid back; an American man wouldn't mind to meet the woman he invited out to dinner directly at the restaurant without picking her up; whereas a Mediterranean man would never do that finding it totally unpolite. The concept of 'couple' is a bit different: our men are more protective than American men. Compared to US we're a bit old-fashioned about man-woman relationships; but it's ok, I have no problem with my American boyfriend;)

Here in Canada we learn a great deal about America. We learn almost as much as we do about Canada. We touch base on the rest of the countries but no where near as much as th US.
I am not a judgemental person i feel we are equal and ethnic gender has nothing to do it with how I see people. Everywhere you go you get the same, racist, ignorant, inconsiderate, selfish people be it Canada, America, Indonesia it really doesn't matter where you go or who you are.

I'm in Western Canada(AB). In grade 8 we basically had learned some history of the U.S, not alot. Geographically we had to name each state along with it's capital. Involvment in types of wars and destruction. I find Americans to be very patriotic.
