Because painting them would be too messy for the children if they did not dry overnight.

Well..just think about gifts wrapped with anything else besides wrapping paper like plastic. I guess it is the fun that we all get when we tear the paper off of the gifts on Christmas morning. But to seriously answer your question...I do not know why we wrap gifts with paper.

We don't buy ours--if something MUST be wrapped we use the funny papers--and it is amazing how many people carefully unwrap the paper and READ them!!!
Wrapping paper is a waste of money--my son asked for a present that he could rip the paper off of and I said that I would wrap all his presents but first I would return half of them in order to have the money to buy paper. He decided ripping paper was overrated.
Paper is part of the commercialism of the day--cards, fancy meals that many people refuse to eat any other time of the year are others. Ribbons, double stick tape, gift tags...all eat into your holiday budget.

LOL I ask myself that every year when I buy wrapping paper. Why am I paying for paper that they will just tear & rip and throw in the rubbish when they are done? I suppose it is part of the decorations that we do at this time of year and we want to keep hidden what the package contains until the day of opening and we enjoy the expressions of joy and surprise.

To make the package appealing to the eye and to keep the gift receiver from knowing what it is ahead of time
