My husband played Guitar Hero just one time a few weeks ago, and has talked about it ever since. I want to get it for him for Christmas, but he doesn't remember if he played 1 or 2, and I do want it to be a bit of a surprise.

So for you gaming folks, which version do you think is better?

I have both and I would say that you should start him off with Guitar Hero 1 (the original) for the following reasons:

The first, and biggest reason, is that the learning curve is much smoother in the first game. Moving from lower to higher difficulty levels is handles in a very continuous way. Whereas in GH2 the curve jumps pretty high from medium to hard.

Second, I think the song list is slightly better in the first game, though both are terrific!

Some might mention that GH2 has a practice mode which is cool and unique, which is true, but again since the learning curve is handled so smoothly in the first one he'll be just fine!

Then, after mastering GH1 he'll be ready to take on the tougher difficulty of GH2 when you buy it for his birthday later in the year!!

Happy shopping!

Most stores are demoing Guitar Hero II. Guitar Hero II has special bundle package where you get the guitar controller and game for $79. On Guitar Hero, you will have to buy the guitar controller, $59 and the game, $39 separate. There is couple of wireless guitar controllers, $59 that can play with both versions of Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero game is $39, and Guitar Hero II game is $49.
Your best deal is the Guitar Hero II bundle, then buy Guitar Hero game.

Why dont you get him both, I got the Guitar Hero 2 for my boyfriend for his BDay, and now he wants the other one too, cause they have different songs on them, that way he can start out with the first and move on to the second. Just make sure if you do get both to get them both with the guitar, cause you can play against each other if you have two guitars, and its fun!

If he just played the game a few weeks ago as a demo then it was GH II.
